In place of our scheduled conversation this night, the wonderful comment by our President will engage us this night. So many of us have heard how he categorically stated that the wife's place is the kitchen, living room and the other room.
For our convo this night, here's my view.
When I watched that video clip, I tried laughing it off as a joke because there was no way he could've made such comment on an International platform. But the more I tried to convince myself that it was a joke, it dawned on me what so many women are passing through in the hands of your husbands in this country and in this state. Even some of our parents are not left out. Everyday, by either covert or overt actions, the men keep pushing the ladies and boxing them into a corner. Telling them through objectification as sex objects, "You belong to the bedroom".
Tonight, I wish to remind my young readers in this state that no matter who you are, your dreams, aspirations and opinions are very much valid. The man in Awka, who is well educated and understands the workings of the 21st century world, cannot go to Onitsha, marry a beautiful lady only to relegate her to his kitchen, sitting room and the other room. It is, to say the least, very condescending. Can you do that?
As we grow and assume positions in the society, let us not repeat the mistakes of our parents and elders. The President has spoken and he may still release a statement to clear us on what he meant. But personally, take it upon yourself that you will involve the females in your life in the process of planning and decision making. Even as we approach an election year in this state, the ladies deserve to vote for a person of their own choice. Don't allow yourself to wallow under the ignorance of whoever thinks he is more superior than you. You are unique and can make rational decisions on your own.
Going forward, I hope the words of our President will be merely a strong point of comic relief. The ladies deserve more in this country and in this state. They are already sacrificing more to see we have a better nation. Wherever you may be, from Onitsha to Ogidi, Nkpor to Nnewi, Ihiala to Uga, Agulu to Ozubulu, any part of this state you may be residing, be strong and courageous... Your voice will be heard.
Till we get to the Promised Land, I shall be waiting for when you will pass me a glass of water and thank God for the gift of grace for the race.
