When Kunta Kinte was sold into slavery and his slave masters tortured him repeatedly to accept the new name and identity they gave to him, he refused. He maintained, my name is Kunta Kinte.
In the movie "Game of Thrones", Tyrion Lannister offered a very wise counsel to his transducers who spited him. He told them, when you wear what you are and who you are, nobody can use it against you.
In our world today, we have so many reasons to desire losing our identity and name. Hard times can make you forsake your roots and denounce your identity so you can align yourself with the creme of society. It could also be because your old identity never gave you reasons to be proud of who you are and aspire to become more.
In the different situations that you find yourself; situations that break your heart, hurt your mental well-being, kill your belief in the goodness of our world or make you think less of yourself, always remember that nobody can hurt you if you know who you are. Like Tyrion said, when you wear who you are, nobody can use it against you.
While you work and aspire to bigger things, don't lose sight of your background and identity. In all things, you will sour higher regardless of where you started.
Till we get to the Promised Land, I shall be waiting for when you will pass me a glass of water and thank God for the gift of grace for the race.
